No-Till (No tillage, no ploughing, reduced tillage)

  • No-till increases organic matter and biological activity.
  • No-till increases water infiltration.
  • No-till protects the soil from water evaporation, temperature changes, wind and water erosion.
  • No-till reduces weeds especially when combined with cover cropping.
  • No-till reduces field operations.
  • Tillage physically breaks up the soil structure (aggregates), fungi and microbial communities reducing water holding capacity.
  • Tillage introduces more oxygen and increases the oxidation of organic compounds increasing release of CO2 and reducing carbon sequestration.
  • Tillage introduces more oxygen and increases the oxidation of nutrients making them more mobile with greater loss from the soil profile.
We think because humans have tilled the land for so long that it's the way things should be done.
We know more now. We can think differently about things.
